What types of material can I submit?
Black and white art/comics, poetry, and short fiction in the areas of horror, dark fantasy, and the supernatural.

Do you accept submissions through snail mail?
Reluctantly. We charge a $5 fee for mail-in submissions to cover administrative costs. Use our CONTACT page to request our mailing address.

I live outside of the United States. Will you consider my work for publication?
No. Our focus is on creative talent from the Midwest region of the U.S.

Who decides if my work gets selected?
The editorial staff, assisted by volunteers from the arts community will make the final determination.

Whom should I contact to inquire about the status of my submission?
There is no need to contact us. If your submission is selected, you will hear from us.

Do you send out rejection notifications?
No, we do not.

Can I resubmit a rejected story?
You are more than welcome to resubmit. Odds are if we did not select it the first time, we are not likely to accept it the second time.

How much do I get paid?
Again, please check the Submission page for the payment information.

I wrote this story, but I’ve already published it in print/elsewhere on the Web. Can I still submit it to you?
As long as the author still retains the rights to do so, yes.

May I send you more than one story at once?
Yes, but please fill out the submission form for each story.

Do I retain the copyright to my published artwork/story?
Yes. Dark Highlands only requires first publication rights of winning submissions, including the right to: publish winning submissions in the specified volume; include excerpts of winning submissions on our webpage, on our Facebook page, and in podcasts, press releases, and other promotional materials; and re-publish winning submissions in a future “Best of Dark Highlands Anthology.” Artists and writers otherwise retain full copyright over their works and may submit them for publication elsewhere as they choose.

Will you send me comments on my story?
No, unfortunately the demands and requirements of the editors' day-to-day lives do not allow us time to comment on every submission.

Can I change the story I submitted with an updated draft?
Updated drafts, unless specifically requested by the editors, will be treated as new submissions.

If you accept my piece, what else do you need from me?
We will contact you if we require further information.

Do you consider novel excerpts?
We will not consider novel excerpts, but we will consider serializing larger works.

Do you read all of every story submitted?
Absolutely.

If my story is selected for publication, can I get discounted copies of the anthology?
If selected, you will receive one complimentary copy of the volume in which the story appears. Additional copies may be purchased at full retail price.

Can I submit a piece in a language other than English?
Dark Highlands only accepts submissions in English, R’lyehian, Akkadian cuneiform, and Linear A.
